Wicked

This weekend my mom and I went to go see Wicked in San Francisco. It was a phenomenal play! In fact it kind of confirmed that I like musicals - not sure why but for awhile I thought I was not a huge fan, in reality I like them quite a bit - just not remade into movies. This play will make you think about the Wizard of Oz in a very different way - I can say I will never look at the movie the same again - although with Tim Burton behind the reigns of an 09 remake - none of us will. (if ever you need a children's story spooked out and exposed for all it's weirdness all while incorporating fantastic imagery - call Tim Burton). 

Sitting next to us were two little girls with these fantastic capes - this made me think of two things. 

A) Morgan would love a cape like they had, and they were gorgeous - this caused a little extra tug on my already nagging idea that I NEED to learn to sew. When I do learn to sew my first project should definitely be a cape. Given my average timelines of getting around to learning new things, she should have a cape by oh, 16 or so. Do you think she'll still want it? ha ha 

B) I can't wait to be able to take her to her first Broadway play / musical. It would be uber-fantastic if it were a Broadway play on actual Broadway (for me too - NYC needs to see my person and I it) but SF or another comparable city would be just fine too :-).  I realize I have a bit more time until she is old enough, and trust me given her current speed of growth and aging I am not rushing anything to move any faster than it already is - but it is still fun to think of. 

If you have not seen Wicked, make a point to go if you can - it's SO worth it!!!

Field Trip Update

Morgan has completed her third week of field trips. So far she is enjoying every minute of them, as well as her new class.  They have gone star gazing and swimming, park playing and picnic"ing", golfing and bear building and still have two months of fun trips.

She even told me the other day - I get to have so much fun huh? way MORE than you do.

Yes, yes... she does... as it should be!

Lovin' Summer

Now that summer has officially started, I am reminded of how much we love summer. I appreciate all the seasons for their various qualities and offerings, but summer is definitely at the top! Longer days, warmer weather, permission (almost obligation) from the season to spend more time on play and less on the ordinary afternoon grind. 

Last night was a perfect representation of Summer. Instead of heading straight home from school we took a detour to the library and park. I LOVE that the library is open late (until 7) allowing us enough time to peruse the books and load up our bag (this time it was all about dogs and only books about / with dogs). Ever since starting the reading program we are going through books crazy fast; 30 minutes of reading = many, many children's books. I think we will have half the children's section read by the end of our 20 hours.  The other great thing about the library is that it is located next to one of our favorite parks. 

We headed over with picnic dinner in hand, ate our peanut butter sandwiches and accompanying food items, and then played. We spent at least an hour playing on the playground,kicking her soccer ball (she loves the big soccer nets they have set up at the park) and reading a few of our books. It did get us home a bit past bed time, but luckily she was compliant with taking her bath and heading straight to bed (falling asleep very soon after laying down). 

Tonight - swimming. A 94 degree day is enough to warrant an afternoon swim and with a pool about 50 or so feet away - there is no reason not to. Yet another reason - WE LOVE SUMMER!

Morgan's Rockin' Rainin' Party

The birthday party process was a nail-biter for sure. I have learned (through this experience) that RSVPs begin a couple of days before the party, many people do not RSVP to say they will not attend, and luckily I was not part of the "people just show up" statstic - I have heard all about this in the last week or so.  Up until late last week I was crossing my fingers that kids would come. I know it's summer and that makes it more difficult as people go on vacation / camping and such. We had to choose a date earlier than her birthday because it falls on the July 4th weekend - and that is a definite for non-availability. I could have tried after - but that spans into July and equals HOT!!! (well, usually equals - this year who knows). In the end we received 5 RSVPs, which is just right for her age - that's supposedly the rule, the same number of kids as their age. 

The morning was perfect - not a cloud in the sky - sunny - mild temp. Perfect! until.... 11:30. The party started at 10:30 and all was good until around 11:15 when Bob pointed to the sky and showed me the clouds - not just any clouds - armagedon type dark grey clouds that spanned the sky without one opening of sun. Sure enough, 15 minutes later it rained. It started as a light drizzle, okay this still works - and then decided to rain. Luckily it did not create a downpour, but heavy enough of a rain to force everyone underneath the awning set up outside. We ended up moving the party inside. After which it decided to return to a drizzle and go away. The kids were able to go back outside to the bounce house (thankfully it had a roof) and finish playing. 

Morgan was impressed with her party - especially her stage. Grandpa had some extra 2 x 4s and plywood and built her a stage (such a step up from my original plan of hanging sheets). The art area was a 

HUGE hit - and an added bonus since one of her friends had a broken foot and could not bounce or stand for that matter. They all loved wacking the pinata; a pinata that decided it needed a beat down to actually release treat bags. 

Although everything did not go as planned and we had a small attendance Morgan still had fun.  In the end I just wanted her to have a great first birthday party and to get that magical feeling from it. We may have gone above and beyond...but it's worth it in the end, and next year I'll be able to edit (or at least I think I will).  :-)

Cavity Free is the Way to Be!

Today was Morgs 6 month check up at the dentist and it is clear to me that later appointments are not good for her. She cooperated as much as she had to - but those back teeth will once again go without x-rays and that fluoride foam  - yeah, who needs that anyway. 

AND THEN, there was an older girl in one of the chairs near the exam area having an involved procedure - she was kind of screeching and such which led Morgan to question - what exactly are they doing to her??? Mainly for the purpose of figuring out if they soon would be inflicting that same torture upon her. I assured her she was safe, but did use it as an opportunity to remind the importance of brushing teeth (sorry to the girl for using her pain as an example and for assuming bad brushing techniques on her part).   

She walked away with an A+, no cavities, and her prize box finds. We'll be back again in 6 months - perhaps she'll be more willing next time - perhaps....
